Stars: Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays, Colin Firth

Synopsis: With the clock ticking, two young soldiers must cross enemy lines to deliver a message that could save the lives of a battalion of 1,600 British men.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. If there’s ever a movie to drag yourself away from your sofa for, it’s this one. Technically astounding – it’s filmed to look like one long shot – it really should be seen on the biggest screen possible.

2. The two young leads are absolutely fantastic.

3. It’s a frontrunner for the 2020 Best Picture Oscar.

THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD

Release date: 24 January

Director: Armando Iannucci

Three reasons to be excited:

2. Director/writer Armando Iannucci (whose last film was the award-winning satire The Death Of Stalin) once again demonstrates his flair for biting funny.

Director: Jay Roach

Stars: Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie

Synopsis: Based on true accounts, Bombshell is the gripping story of the women who sought to expose serial harasser Roger Ailes – chairman of the all-powerful Fox News network.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie. We don’t envy the Academy having to choose between these three acting heavyweights.

2. John Lithgow, who’s superb as slimy but brilliant Fox boss Roger Ailes.

3. The script (written by The Big Short’s Charles Randolph) simply fizzes.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Marcus and Mike’s legs might be a little slower than when we last saw them but their mouths are just as fast (and funny).

2. The addition of a team of younger cops (among them High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens and Riverdale’s Charles Melton) adds welcome spice.

3. Jacob Scipio’s Armando Armas is a terrific-looking villain.

HARLEY QUINN: BIRDS OF PREY

Three reasons to be excited:

1. It’s a Pixar movie!

2. Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) are voicing the elf brothers – and they’re as hilarious.

3. The animation is absolutely eye-popping.

MULAN

Director: Niki Caro

Stars: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Jet Li

Synopsis: To fight brutal invaders, a young girl pretends to be a boy in order to take the place of her ailing father.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Of all of Disney’s recent – and slated – remakes, this is the live-action update we’ve most been looking forward to.

2. Mulan is the leading lady of our times.

3. Yifei Liu looks absolutely incredible as the titular warrior princess.

A QUIET PLACE PART II

Release date: TBC

Director: John Krasinski

Stars: Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Noah Jupe

Synopsis: Set in the direct aftermath of the original (but also including flashbacks to the very start of the crisis), this hugely anticipated sequel sees the surviving members of the Abbott family leaving the safety of their farmhouse – and their sandtrails. And this time the alien creatures – who, if you remember, hunt by sound – aren’t the only things to be fearful of.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. The first movie was a genuine phenomenon – have you ever witnessed such a quiet cinema? People actually stopped eating their popcorn. We can’t wait to see where returning writer/director John Krasinski takes the story next.

2. Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are back as Evelyn, Regan and Marcus Abbott.

3. The trailer’s promise of new, more human threats. We’re so intrigued!

THE NEW MUTANTS

Release date: TBC

Director: Josh Boone

Stars: Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Antonio Banderas

Synopsis: Five young people with extraordinary abilities are kept at a secret facility against their will. Can they come to terms with the sins of their past in order to reclaim their future?

Three reasons to be excited:

1. The release date for The New Mutants has been bounced about few times but now it looks like we’re finally going to get to see it!

2. It’s a much darker take on the X-Men than we’re used it. It fact, we’ll go as far as saying it’s a horror film.

3.The young cast of emerging talents.

Director: Cate Shortland

Stars: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz

Synopsis: Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Natasha Romanoff (aka the Avenger, Black Widow) finds herself bereft of friends – but with plenty of foes for company.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. With Black Widow a huge fan favourite, this could – and should – go supersonic!

2.  While not quite an origin story, we’re looking forward to this film revealing more about how she came to be the way she is.

3. As always, Marvel has ‘assembled’ an incredible cast. Black Widow’s red-hot line-up includes current Hollywood darling Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff and David Harbour as Red Guardian, while Robert Downey, Jr. is rumoured to be making a cameo appearance as Tony Stark.

THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW

Release date: 15 May

Director: Joe Wright

Synopsis: Based on A. J. Finn’s bestselling novel, this star-packed thriller sees Amy Adams playing Anna Fox, an agoraphobic woman living alone in New York who witnesses an act of extreme violence while spying on her new neighbours.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. It’s an especial must-see if you’re a fan of the work of Alfred Hitchcock or such unreliable narrator yarns such as Gone Girl and The Girl On The Train.

2. Amy Adams as Anna Fox. Could this be the film that finally wins the six-time Oscar nominee an Academy Award?

3. Joe Wright is behind the camera – and everything he touches tends to turn to Oscar (Atonement, Darkest Hour, etc)!

WONDER WOMAN 1984

Release date: 5 June

Director: Patty Jenkins

Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine

Synopsis: In 1984 Diana Prince (aka Wonder Woman) must overcome not one but two formidable foes: cutthroat businessman Maxwell Lord and supervillainess-in-the-making Barbara Ann Minerva.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. The shift in setting from the First World War to 1984 is intriguing.

2. Kristen Wiig as Cheetah seems like inspired casting to us. And we’re also pleased to see the return of Themyscira and the Amazonians, as well as Chris Pine’s thought-dead Steve Trevor.

3. The peerless Gal Gadot. Truly a Wonder Woman.

SOUL

Release date: 19 June

Directors: Pete Docter, Kemp Powers

Voices: Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, John Ratzenberger

Synopsis: A middle-school music teacher finally gets a long-dreamed-for jazz gig, only for an accident to see his soul separated from his body and transported to the “You Seminar”, a centre where souls gain passions before being transferred to a newborn child.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Two Pixar movies in the same calendar year? We are not worthy!

2.  We are getting Coco and Inside Out vibes, which is no bad thing. Those two movies were incredible!

3. True to form, Pixar has assembled a vocal cast to die for including Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey and Daveed Diggs. Get ready to laugh and cry!

TENET

Release date: 17 July

Director: Christopher Nolan

Stars: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson

Synopsis: A US secret agent is given the unenviable task of preventing World War Three through time travel.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. A new Christopher Nolan film is a real cinematic event. If you’re not excited, you should be!

2. The trailer is tantalising and typically Nolan. Action. Espionage. The Afterlife. It’s all here!

3. BlacKkKlansman’s John David Washington in the lead role, with High Life’s Robert Pattinson in support.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Release date: 17 July

Director: Joseph Kosinski

Stars: Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connely

Synopsis: Three decades after we last saw him, ace aviator Pete Mitchell (callsign Maverick) is tasked with training a new group of Top Gun graduates, including the son of his late best friend and flying partner, Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Top Gun is one of the 80s’ most iconic and quotable movies.

2. When it comes to insane stunts, main man Tom Cruise literally has no fear. We’re expecting our jaws to be on the floor for most of this sequel.

3. It isn’t just Maverick who’s returning. Val Kilmer is also back as his one-time foe Iceman.

GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE

Release date: 10 July

Director: Jason Reitman

Stars:  Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard

Synopsis: A single mom and her two kids move to a dilapidated farmhouse in Oklahoma, left to her by her late father, Egon Spengler. It isn’t long before things are going bump in the well…

Three reasons to be excited:

1. The trailer’s Stranger Things vibe, enhanced of course by the casting of Finn ‘Mike Wheeler’ Wolfhard as Trevor.

2. The surviving cast-members from movies one and two – Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson – are all confirmed to be returning, while Jason Reitman is the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman.

3. Paul Rudd in a key role, because who doesn’t love Paul Rudd?

JUNGLE CRUISE

Release date: 24 July

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra

Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt

Synopsis: Scientist Lily joins forces with reluctant riverboat captain Frank on an adventure to locate a miraculous, healing tree located deep within the Amazon.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are two of Hollywood’s most charismatic stars.

2. It’s based on a Disney theme park ride. Hey, it worked for Pirates Of The Caribbean!

3. The chemistry between the two leads looks off the charts. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a really good will-they/ won’t-they romance!

PETER RABBIT 2

Release date: 17 July

Director: Will Gluck

Voices: James Corden, Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie

Synopsis: Fed up of being known as the naughty one, Peter Rabbit runs away from the newly married Thomas McGregor’s farm, where he meets an old friend of his father’s.

Two reasons to be excited:

1. James Corden proved to be a winning Peter Rabbit. He’s back and all of the main cast from the original are, which bodes well.

2. The CGI really is seamless. You’ll believe rabbits can talk. And kittens, puddle-ducks and frogs for that matter.

BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC

Release date: 21 August

Director: Dean Parisot

Stars: Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, Brigette Lundy-Paine

Synopsis: Foretold saviours of the universe Bill and Ted are now middle-aged dads still trying to write the song that will see them fulfil their lofty destiny.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. In most excellent news, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are both back as Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan and Bill S. Preston respectively.

2. We absolutely love the fact that our heroes are middle-aged dads now. That’s a lot of comedy gold to mine.

3. Winter has promised that this threequel won’t be “some stale knock-off”. “The [first two] films have an anachronistic quality to them,” he told EW. “I’m really happy that this one is the same.”

INFINITE

Release date: 7 August

Director: Antoine Fuqua

Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jason Mantzoukas

Synopsis: A man discovers that the strange visions he’s been having are actually memories from his former lives.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. The plot. Literally all we know is the above and yet we’re absolutely hooked. We love a high concept!

2. It’s based on D. Eric Maikranz’s The Reincarnationist Papers, a fascinating work of fiction that tells of a secret society whose members possess a total recall of their past lives. It’s available through lots of online sellers if you want to check it out.

3. Antoine Fuqua (of Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen and The Magnificent Seven) directs. Which means high-octane action and guns aplenty are guaranteed.

THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT

Release date: 11 September

Director: Michael Chaves

Stars: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Julian Hilliard

Synopsis: In one of the most sensational cases in their files, the Warrens find themselves caught up in a murder investigation in which the suspect claims demonic possession as a defence for the first time in US history.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. The first two Conjuring films were brilliant. And utterly terrifying. We’re looking forward to more sleepless nights courtesy of this third chapter, which is once again based on a horrifying true story.

2. The return of Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Lorraine and Ed Warren. Both acclaimed actors, they bring a quiet authority to the real-life paranormal investigators who, let’s face it, could come across as quacks in the wrong hands.

3. We’ve got high hopes for director Michael Chaves (who replaces helmer of movies one and two, James Wan). His debut feature film, the Conjuring spin-off The Curse Of La Llorona, was a real skin-crawler.

THE KING’S MAN

Release date: 18 September

Director: Matthew Vaughn

Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Gemma Arterton

Synopsis: History’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds unite to start a war that will kill millions. Can the fledgling Kingsman agency stop them?

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Due to the period setting, there’s no Eggsy this time (he’s but a twinkle in his great grandfather’s eye), but the casting of Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Lee Unwin makes up for it.

2. If it’s even half as funny, sharp and quotable as the first two Kingsman movies (and the trailer makes it look like it is), then we’re in for a treat.

3. The supporting cast is terrific. From Ralph Fiennes as the Duke Of Oxford to Gemma Arterton as Polly and Rhys Ifans as Grigori Rasputin , Matthew Vaughn has hit the inspired casting jackpot once again.

DEATH ON THE NILE

Release date: 9 October

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Stars: Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Kenneth Branagh, Rose Leslie

Synopsis: Based on the Agatha Christie classic, famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot must discover whodunnit when a young heiress dies while vacationing on Egypt’s famous Nile.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Director/star Kenneth Branagh has gathered together another incredible cast, with big-name thespians from every generation.

2. Death On The Nile is one of Christie’s most deliciously plotted and best-loved books. Branagh did a splendid job with the iconic Murder On The Orient Express. Here’s to lightning striking twice!

3. Hercule’s incredible moustache.

VENOM 2

Release date: 2 October

Director: Andy Serkis

Stars: Tom Hardy, Stephen Graham, Woody Harrelson

Synopsis: Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist who – in the original film – became host to a dangerous (and hungry) alien symbiote known as Venom.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Andy Serkis behind the camera really intrigues us.

2. Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson are all back as Eddie Brock, Anne Weying and Cletus Kasady respectively. Between them they have a whopping EIGHT Oscar noms.

3. There’s a rumour (not confirmed) that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could appear.

THE WITCHES

Release date: 16 October

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Stars: Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Octavia Spencer

Synopsis: While staying at a hotel with his grandmother, a young boy stumbles across a convention of evil witches, who turn him into a mouse.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. It’s based on one of Roald Dahl’s very best books.

2. Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch. If anyone can emulate Angelica Huston’s menacingly magnificent turn in the 1990 movie, it’s she.

3. Robert Zemeckis (of Back To The Future, Forrest Gump, Contact and Who Framed Roger Rabbit fame) is directing. Nobody does the fantastical better.

RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON

Release date: 27 November

Directors: Paul Briggs, Dean Wellins

Voices: Awkwafina, Cassie Steele

Synopsis: In the mystical realm of Kumandra, a fearless female warrior begins an epic quest to find the last dragon…

Three reasons to be excited:

1. There be dragons!

2. Disney has been on fire with its animation lately – think the inspired Ralph Breaks The Internet and the record-breaking Frozen 2. From everything we’re hearing, Raya will continue this hot streak and then some!

3. Awkwafina as water dragon Sisu.

ETERNALS

Release date: 6 November

Director: Chloé Zhao

Stars: Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kit Harrington

Synopsis: A race of immortal beings known as the Eternals battle to protect humankind from the evil Deviants.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. It’s rumoured that Eternals will set up the MCU’s next Big Bad, a foe expected to be even more formidable than Thanos.

2. Let’s take a moment to appreciate that cast. Not only is Angelina Jolie playing Thena, the film also reunites Robb Stark and Jon Snow!

3. The plot apparently spans 7,000 years. Not that we actually mind, of course. The longer the better as far as we’re concerned.

GODZILLA VS. KONG

Release date: 20 November

Director: Adam Wingard

Stars: Millie Bobby Brown, Eiza González, Alexander Skarsgård

Synopsis: The human world holds its breath as ginormous ape King Kong faces off against aquatic behemoth Godzilla. Who will be crowned the ultimate King Of The Monsters?

Three reasons to be excited:

1. It’s cinema’s most iconic monsters going head to head.

2. Millie Bobby Brown is back as monster-whisperer Madison Russell.

3. According to Michael Dougherty,  this is going to be a bit like “Rocky going up against Ivan Drago”.

WEST SIDE STORY

Release date: 18 December

Director: Steven Spielberg

Stars: Ansel Elgort, Rita Moreno, Corey Stoll

Synopsis: Based on the beloved Broadway musical, this drama sees teenagers Tony and Maria falling in love in 1950s New York City, despite being affiliated to rival street gangs – Maria, the Sharks, Tony, the Jets.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. A new Steven Spielberg movie is always something to shout about, and this one is particularly noteworthy as it’s the veteran director’s first full-blown musical.

2. A musical is only as good as its songs and West Side Story’s soundtrack is up there with the very best of them.

3. While we’re looking forward to seeing Baby Driver’s Ansel Elgort as Tony, we’re even more intrigued by newcomer Rachel Zegler as Maria.

DUNE

Release date: 18 December

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Stars: Rebecca Ferguson, Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin.

Synopsis: Based on Frank Herbert’s seminal science-fiction novel, young heir Paul Atreides travels to the dangerous desert planet of Arrakis on a quest to save his family and his people.

Three reasons to be excited:

1. Denis Villeneuve is one of the most visionary directors working in Hollywood today. Arrival was sublime viewing, as too was the criminally underwatched Blade Runner 2049.

2. The cast! It really does read like a who’s who of Hollywood’s current best and brightest.

3. Giant sandworms. If you know, you know. If you don’t then you’ll find out!

COMING 2 AMERICA

Release date: 18 December

Director: Craig Brewer

Stars: Eddie Murphy, John Amos, James Earl Jones

Synopsis: Taking place 30 years after the original, this hotly anticipated follow-up sees Prince Akeem returning to America to meet the long-lost son he never knew he had!

Three reasons to be excited:

1. The fish-out-of-water plot line never gets old.

2.  Amazingly, most of the original cast are coming back including Arsenio Hall as Semmi and James Earl Jones as King Jaffe.

3. Prince Akeem was always one of Eddie Murphy’s very best roles. If he can recapture the wide-eyed wonder that made the character so charming, this – just like the original – is going to be an utter delight.
